Thoughts from the pulpit ...

Hello all,

Thoughts for the week ahead ...

From the lectionary we can look at a reading from Philippians 3. In this week's epistle (aka a letter) reading, the apostle Paul gives words of encouragement to the people of the Roman province of Philippi--his first venture into Europe.

This isn't the strange part.

What's strange is that he's writing this letter from a jail of an unknown location. Scholars say there are 7 recorded instances that Paul is in jail.

The congregation is worried and sends someone (Epaphroditus; don't sweat the pronunciation) to send a care package. How thoughtful! First century prison ministry in action.

What's interesting is that Paul tells the congregation thank you for your concern, but don't worry about me; focus on the real issues going on around you. There were forces dividing them and luring them from Christ's teachings at that time. There were those who looked like them but who contradicted Christ's teachings living among them.

Paul writes about his joy for the Philippians' commitment to the gospel.

  • How do these words impact us today?

  • Where are there neighbors and fellow citizens driving wedges between us and Christ's teachings?

May we rejoice in the work of the Spirit in and through us.

Best,

Marcus
