One Great Hour of Sharing

Sharing Love Helps Repair the Breach

How do you show love?

Jesus calls us to love one another — with the kind of love that is shared freely with all people. This is our calling as Christ’s Church: to love others as Jesus loved us. To love every person we encounter despite the many walls that separate us.

In Isaiah 58, the Scripture that best helps us to understand the ministries supported by One Great Hour of Sharing, we are called to be repairers of the breach. The prophet implores us to see those on the margins, the hungry and afflicted, as those for whom God holds great care. And so should we. Showing our love, sharing our love, is how we repair the breach in so many of our interactions in this world. One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS), is an annual offering that responds directly to the needs God has called us to fulfill in Isaiah 58.

Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. The three programs supported by OGHS — Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People — all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope.

Received during the season of Lent (March 5 – April 20, 2025), each gift to OGHS helps to improve the lives of people in these challenging situations. The Offering provides us a way to share God’s love with our neighbors in need.

In fact, OGHS is the single, largest way Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world. When we all do a little, it adds up to a lot.

PHP works to alleviate hunger and eliminate its root causes. As recognized by PC(USA) policies, hunger is an extremely complex phenomenon with economic, political, environmental, and social causes. Working through relationships and partnerships in the United States and around the world, we seek to find out why people are hungry and to encourage action that will help address the underlying causes — including gender and racial injustice, systemic poverty, climate change and environmental racism, violent conflict, lack of affordable housing, and more.

SDOP is a ministry that affirms God’s concern for humankind.  We are Presbyterians and ecumenical partners dissatisfied with poverty and oppression, united in faith and action through sharing, confronting, and enabling by participating in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed, and disadvantaged people, seeking to change the structures that perpetuate poverty, oppression, and injustice. Through SDOP, we invest in communities responding to their experiences of oppression, poverty and injustice and educates Presbyterians about the impact of these issues
